The Woodford French Manhattan
11x14, oil on birch panel
by Michael Reibel
The books The Manhattan The Story of the First Modern Cocktail with Recipes by Philip Greene and Paris Cocktails by Doni Belau inspired this painting. Philip Greene, “For much of the nineteenth century, the cocktail was a simple affair: spirit, sugar, water, and bitters. Then came the Manhattan, and everything changed. It so altered the drinking landscape that the original cocktail became old hat, old school: the Old-Fashioned.”
Per barnotes.com and writer Vincent Raymond: “A classic on its own and a variation nonetheless of its namesake, the Manhattan. People choose their preference of cognac, bourbon or rye, and do likewise with choosing their Bitters preference, Orange or Angostura.”
Woodford Reserve’s recipe adds Chambord to further the French influence.
2 oz Woodford Bourbon, 1 oz Chambord , 2/3 oz Sweet Vermouth , 2 dashes Angostura Bitters , Luxardo Maraschino Cherry Garnish
Combine all ingredients into a mixing glass and fill it with large ice. Stir for a full minute and strain into a chilled coupe. Garnish by dropping a Luxardo Maraschino Cherry into the bottom of the coupe.
